Blogging and homeschooling are full-time jobs.

Both jobs demand your time, energy and lots of effort.

This past summer, I had a major burnout and had to take 2 months off of blogging.

I was just mentally exhausted. So I needed to come up with a plan to guide me.

Here are 7 ways to avoid burnout while blogging and homeschooling.

1) Schedule my homeschool week

Homeschooling is my number one priority so that takes precedence over everything else. I plan out my weekly goals for each of my boys every weekend. Morning is devoted to school and the computer is only used for school purposes. I try my best not to answer calls (unless it’s an emergency), or be distracted by anything else. Everything waits until our goals for school are met for that day.  By being more organized as a homeschool mom, I can be more effective when my week is well planned out.

Here are some tips that have helped me become a more organized homeschool mom.

2) Having a shutdown routine at night

Shutting down all the browsers and writing down to do lists for the next day will help you organize your thoughts. It will also help you to get a better night’s rest.   You can read more about my shutdown routine here.

3) Having set office hours.

Setting office hours can be a life changer.   When you commit to 2-3 hours a day just for blog work, it will enable you to focus and get things done.

Writing down tasks for each day the night before will help you to not waste time figuring out what to do during the office hours. This will help you become more efficient.

4)No scrolling through social media

This is big. I have found myself aimlessly scrolling through Facebook or Instagram for hours. Before I know it, I’ve wasted precious time that I could have used wisely elsewhere. So I try to put my phone away in the kitchen during our school and work hours.

5) Unplug one day every week

Take a day off the internet and the computer to relax and unwind. Go for a nature walk or connect with friends. Unplugging and taking a day off will make you feel more rested and free your mind of clutter. This will, in turn, make you a better blogger and homeschool mom.

6) Establish a quiet time

Finding something to do other than homeschooling and blogging has really helped me relax. Last year, that’s all I was doing. Teaching and working on the blog. This year, I’ve implemented 30 minutes of quiet time to our schedule after school is done. It’s a time when all 3 of us find something to do quietly (no screens), whether its’ reading, painting, working on a handicraft, trying a new recipe etc.

7) Saying no to things that are not important

As a blogger, you are inundated with emails, guest post offers and companies asking you to write reviews. I’ve learned that I don’t have to agree to everything and that it’s okay to say no. When you’re first starting out, you feel like you’ve to say yes to everything to get your name and blog out there. But now I’ve learned that I need to use that time to grow my own blog and say no to things that are not important.

Homeschooling and blogging can be exhausting and it can take a toll on you. By putting into practice these 7 steps, you can avoid burnouts while doing the two jobs that you love.

  1. Numbers 5, 6, & 7 are, in my opinion, the most important especially saying “no.” There are so many shiny goodies to take part in. Our families will thank us.
